Learning at NICU of Queen Mary Hospital

date:2020/2/6 9:35:15 hot:1508

Recommended by the hospital, I won Dr. Cheng Yu Tung's Senior Clinical Fellowship from Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong in 2019, and studied in Queen Mary Hospital from September 1 to November 30, 2019. The following is my learning experience in the past three months.

The University of Hong Kong (or HKU, as it is familiarly known to students, staff and alumni) is the oldest tertiary education institution in Hong Kong. On March 11, 1912, the University was officially opened, and the Faculty of Medicine, evolved from the Hong Kong College of Medicine, was founded in 1887. Of the College’s early alumni, the most renowned was Dr. Sun Yat-sen. On February 20, 1923, Sun Yat-sen was invited to visit the University of Hong Kong, and made his historic speech at the Great Hall (now Loke Yew Hall). Sun Yat-sen began his speech by saying that, "I feel as though I have returned home, because Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong are my intellectual birthplace." In 2005, The Faculty of Medicine was renamed Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

In 1937, Queen Mary Hospital(QMH) opened and has served as the University's teaching hospital since then. It plays an important role in the training of medical, dental and nursing students and post-graduation education. QMH is one of the main public hospitals in Hong Kong. It is located in pokfulam road in the west of Hong Kong Island.

As a regional general emergency hospital, QMH provides comprehensive medical services for the public, including 24-hour emergency room services, various specialized departments and rehabilitation services. The Department of Neonatology in QMH, including NICU and SCBU, is equipped with high-tech and complete hardware facilities in the ward. The medical staff have strong basic skills. They always attach great importance to details. The diagnosis and treatment process is standardized and rigorous.

They conduct various clinical learning and communication regularly, including neonatal team group discussion, perinatal round, surgical round, genetic round, and medical teleconference with other local hospitals and Medical School of Stanford University etc. They regularly discuss death cases, typical and difficult cases to summarize experience and draw lessons from these cases, find out the deficiencies and make up for them, and carry out continuous medical improvement so as to improve medical work.

The rules and regulations of the hospital are relatively perfect, with all relevant departments of the hospital and relevant social departments are connected in an orderly manner. Doctors pay attention to humanistic care. The medical expenses of public hospitals are relatively low and few conflicts between doctors and patients occurred. However, the waiting time for treatment and examination of chronic diseases is too long, which may be relevant to the health care system of Hong Kong.

I have reached the original goal of my learning plan through three-month further study, and it solved my confusions produced in the process of working. After returning to the hospital, I will try my best to implement what I have learned to improve the diagnosis and treatment of NICU in our hospital.
